Whilst at the computer suite today I introduced the other subtraction games to the children. When I showed them the soccer game all the children became very excited and wanted England to win because "Mrs Whitfield is from England." They went off to work in pairs and to choose which games they wanted to play. Most chose the soccer game and enjoyed moving the players to work out the answers. When I asked which part of the game they liked best they said" by clicking on David Beckham you get to check the answer which is really cool."

Can a learning object improve students motivation, attitudes and ability to subtraction?
Focus
During a discussion about class progress we both commented on how the children often seem reluctant to do subtraction activities but are keen to do addition activities. We also commented on the results from a basic facts test, generally the children in both classes scored higher marks for addition rather than subtraction. The subtraction scores were very low for these children.
When we asked the children why they were reluctant to do work on subtraction they commented "it's hard"and "I don't understand how to do it."
After this discussion we realised that the focus for our action research project could be subtraction. So, we both identified groups of children who we felt needed to improve their attitude and subtraction skills. Then we searched for and downloaded onto the school intranet some subtraction games.
